12 Years: My Messed-up Love Story
by Chetan Bhagat
Chetan Bhagat is best known as the youth icon of India. He is regarded as the voice for aspiration of modern Indian youth. His books are the largest sellers in India's history. Many of his books have been adapted into movies.
12 years My Messed up Love Story is a light contemporary fiction which portrays the messed up love story of Saket and Payal. Saket is a divorcee at 33 and doing stand up comedy at his friend Mudit's club. While Payal is 21, single and working in a equity firm. There are many differences between them yet they are attracted towards each other. But with the family and social pressure and culture differences, they drifted apart from each other.
The book title has been derived from a time frame of 12 years which plays a significant role in the story. I happened to pick up his book after a gap of three long years. I enjoyed reading it with along with all the triumphs and turbulences in a relationship. I also experienced a deeper connection in a relationship with compability, which matters the most.
Mudit, Saket's friend also sets an example of friendship and stands by him through all thicks and thins. The author has comeback with a love story after a decade. The novel hits us differently with emotions, humour, culture and relatable situations. The author writing style is simple and impactful. The light comedy enhances the narration of the book. If you are looking for a messed up love story...go for this one.
