πŸ“š Book Review

Title : Janaka and Ashtavakra
Author : Ashraf Karayath
Language : English
Edition : Paperback
Pages : 232

‘Wake up from your sleep and start walking. You are blissfully immersed with the slumber of self-ignorance. You are only a dream walker in this world of illusions (mithya), an ever-changing appearance of maya. Wake up from your dream and do what needs to be done to gain the ability to see yourself as you really are.’

πŸ’« The story of Janaka and Ashtawakra has two main protagonists. They are the most powerful characters of the story. King Janaka was a popular and emminent king and he was loved by the people of his kingdom. Sage Ashtawakra was a 14 years, with a deformed body but intelligent and enlightened mind.

πŸ’« The story is about King Janaka and his meeting with Sage Ashtawakra. In fact of being surrounded by numerous people the king always found himself alone and deep in thought. He believed in the world beyond the worldly desires. He was often surrounded by bad dreams and nightmares and questioned himself :
'A beggar or a king ? Who am I ?'

πŸ’« Once Sage Ashtawarka visited the King's palace and took part in a debate against the learned sages. To the dismay of the couriers he won the debate, King Janaka became aware of his extraordinary powers and became his disciple.

πŸ’« It is a book which focuses on spirituality and philosophy of life. Everything in this world is an illusion which has no meaning. We have always loved Ramayana and are quite aware of its story. This book is written on the story before the marriage of Sita. Many people are not aware of it.

πŸ’« It is a refreshing and enlightening read. The storyline is excellent, engaging as well as interesting. The tale has been narrated beautifully. The language used is smooth and lucid which makes us easy to connect with the story. The characterization is done very well.

πŸ’« The book is brilliant. The book cover is very beautiful depicting a part of the kingdom against the rays of the sun and mountains in the background. In general I don't like to read mythological stories much but this story mesmerized me from the very starting. The book is like a prized possession for each reader. I recommend it.
